The Magic Word is ‘OnlyCamp’

This morning, we pack up our camping gear, stow away all our utensils and take down the tent. The tent is our little home, the campsite is the garden around it. We have pitched and taken down the tent about 140 times in the last six months. We have our hangman’s breakfast, which is as sumptuous as every other morning: croissants, bread, butter, jam, eggs, yoghurt, fruit, coffee and orange juice. We pay. We are delighted to receive a ten percent discount because we are travelling by bicycle. Shortly after ten o’clock, we cycle onto the road towards Faro. We have a hundred kilometres ahead of us, once along the Algarve towards the east. It is the last time this year.

Here are the most beautiful campsites we stayed at in 2025. We found them all on Park4Night. With a radius of 100 kilometres per tour or day, there is always something suitable on this year’s route.

Camping Krvavica, south of Split, north of Makarska (HR)

Small but beautiful. Terraced campsite with mighty pine trees. The site is fully booked on 12 June and only campers who fit between the pine trees are accepted. Everyone is greeted and bid farewell personally here. A suitable spot with partial or full shade is sought. The beautiful bay with turquoise water is a hundred metres away, yet it is wonderfully peaceful here.
Very friendly and lovingly furnished. Seating with solar-powered glasses for cosy evenings. As if time has been turned back, there are a disproportionate number of campers here. https://www.autocamp-krvavica.com/

Camping Rabrenovic (Tara Plaza) Mojkovac (Mne) 900 MASL

Lovingly designed down to the last detail. The pitches are Scandinavian in size. There are also various other rustic accommodation options. The showers and toilets deserve ***** stars. With a sauna and jacuzzi, nothing is left to be desired. A well-signposted hiking trail with a 360-degree panoramic view from the summit leads directly up here. https://camprabrenovic.com/

Alexander’s Mexikaner (Mne)

Unconventional, lovingly furnished garden camping. Alexander finds the right spot for everyone.

Camping Pé da Munt Sta. Maria Val Müstair (CH)

Graubünden, ** stars that shine very brightly. With heating and a heat lamp in the shower. Bench and fire pit on the pitches. Kiosk with everything you need, cold drinks and refrigerators for guests. So ideal for our day of rest. https://campingstamaria.ch/Schweiz

Camping Interlaken River Lodge (CH)

Casual, daily communal cooking with Indians, Koreans, Australians and Swedes. A tent meadow right at the Aare river, a ten-minute walk to the tourist hustle and bustle of Interlaken. Seating and reclining areas, even in bad weather, and much more. Simply wonderful!!! https://www.riverlodge.ch/

Camping & Farm Xhani near Shkodra (AL)

120 animals and the family take care of their physical well-being.

Camping le Larmont, Pontalier (Fr)

Family-friendly, terraced campsite open all year round in the French Jura. Beautifully located in the Haut-Doubs department. Suitable for bad weather. Special feature: tents can be pitched under a shelter. Extra low prices for cyclists and hikers, close to the pretty capital Pontalier.
Table football, boules, table tennis and various board games are available to borrow and play. The Tour de France is shown on television. Fridge, hob and microwave. https://camping-pontarlier.fr

Pontalier

This year’s discovery is the OnlyCamps in France: Le Claux in the Massif Central is the most beautiful of them all. There are 75 more throughout France in the high season for 15€/pitch/2 people or 23€/pitch/2 people with a swimming pool, fridge and other amenities for cyclists. Former ACSII sites, etc. OnlyCamp is a young subsidiary of Huttopia Campsites. https://www.onlycamp.fr/en/

Camping Municipal Le Claux (Fr)

In the heart of the Massif Central, in Europe’s largest volcanic landscape. Beautiful, spacious site with lots of paragliders. Lounge with refrigerator. Brand new, comfortable sanitary facilities. Small mini market in the village. https://www.camping-le-claux.fr/

Camping in Northern Spain

We loved all of the campsites in Northern Spain without exception. Even when the sites were full and we did not have a reservation, we always managed to find a spot for our tent. We almost never paid for the pitch itself, only for the person and a small tent (which we think is fair). There were plenty of charging points for our electrical devices everywhere, and the sanitary facilities were spot on. The bars and restaurants are not just for campers, but are open to the public. There is no obligation to purchase food or drink, so we cyclists always have somewhere to stay in bad weather.

Los Manzanos, Santa Cruz near A Coruña (E)

This place belongs in our top list because of its location and park-like grounds, featuring menhirs, dolmens and art objects. There is a lovingly furnished lounge connected to the well-equipped cafeteria, and the operators, Marco and co., are very friendly. This campsite is an ideal starting point for visiting the beautiful city of A Coruña in north-western Spain. For €1.55, the public bus runs regularly, even on Sundays and public holidays, until late at night, to the city centre. campinglosmanzanos.com

Camping Lago Mar, Muxia (E)

Camping Lago Mar is a good example of some of the sites here. It is run by four young people who have taken over from the previous owners. They have a beautiful house with a covered, glazed terrace high above the sea, views and access to the beach, and a cosy space to live, work or just have a coffee. Numerous works of art are on display, enhancing the ambience. Chickens provide fresh eggs. The strawberry jam is homemade. A wonderful place, not only for cyclists, but for all camping enthusiasts and nature lovers. https://www.campinglagomar.es/

Salema Eco Camp (P)

The most beautiful campsite in the western Algarve, located between Lagos and Sagres. The original small fishing village of Salema in the bay with white sand is only about a kilometre away. Sometimes we walk, sometimes we cycle. The site is ideal for a night, a holiday or a long stay. Every day, a few hikers or cyclists arrive. We meet campers (mostly in smaller cars) from many different countries here. In addition to good sanitary facilities, a co-working space and an adventure playground, there is also a daily programme of activities such as bird watching, moon photography courses, yoga and meditation. Fresh drinking water is available free of charge from dispensers, and waste is avoided and environmental protection is a top priority. At the InterMarche two kilometres away, we stock up on everything we need for daily life.

As we write this, we are sitting on the beautiful sun terrace in Loulé in Fatima’s and Mario’s villa, looking out over the sea.
